Bogotá and C40 Discuss Sustainable Construction Processes

In an effort to promote more sustainable (clean) construction practices, the city of Bogotá and C40 Cities held a fruitful conversation about sustainable construction processes. This dialogue focused on the implementation of innovative technologies and methods that not only reduce carbon emissions but also improve resilience and equity in the urban environment.

Globally, sustainable construction is gaining ground as a key solution to address the climate crisis. According to the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction report, the construction sector is responsible for more than 23% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, the production of materials such as cement and steel significantly contributes to these emissions, with cement accounting for 8% of global emissions. The adoption of clean construction practices is essential to keep global warming below the critical 1.5°C limit set by the Paris Agreement.

During the conversation, several successful sustainable construction initiatives in cities around the world were highlighted, including the prioritization of reusing existing buildings and the implementation of circular economy principles in new projects. These actions not only help reduce emissions but also promote resource efficiency and waste reduction.

Con la llegada de las altas temperaturas, la Ciudad de Buenos Aires ha implementado nuevamente su Plan de Prevención del Calor, una iniciativa clave para proteger a los ciudadanos de los efectos adversos del calor extremo. Este plan, que se activa ante las alertas amarillas o naranjas emitidas por el Servicio Meteorológico Nacional, incluye una serie de medidas preventivas y de asistencia para los vecinos.

El plan cuenta con la participación de aproximadamente 120 profesionales, tres postas sanitarias móviles y más de 30 Estaciones Saludables distribuidas en parques, plazas y estaciones de subte de la ciudad¹. Estas estaciones ofrecen agua mineral, frutas y barras de cereales, además de realizar controles sanitarios como la medición de la presión arterial y el nivel de glucemia.

Las postas sanitarias se ubican en puntos estratégicos como Retiro, Constitución y el Obelisco, donde se siente más el calor. Además, se presta especial atención a los sectores de riesgo, como embarazadas, bebés, adultos mayores y personas en situación de calle¹. En caso de emergencia, los ciudadanos pueden llamar al 107 (SAME) para atención médica inmediata.

El pasado 20 de agosto, C40 realizó una reunión del grupo de trabajo sobre planes de calor con ciudades miembros de todo el mundo para establecer los requisitos de un buen plan de prevención del calor a través de una reunión denominada “Heat Plan WG Meeting: What’s key to a good heat plan? feat. Buenos Aires”.

GO BILINGUAL facilitó la interacción a través de sus servicios de traducción, asegurando una comunicación fluida y efectiva entre los participantes de diferentes idiomas. Durante esta reunión, se destacó la importancia de contar con un plan bien estructurado y adaptado a las necesidades locales. Buenos Aires Reinforces its Heat Prevention Plan

With the arrival of high temperatures, the City of Buenos Aires has once again implemented its Heat Prevention Plan, a key initiative to protect citizens from the adverse effects of extreme heat. This plan, which is activated in the event of yellow or orange alerts issued by the National Meteorological Service, includes a series of preventive and assistance measures for neighbors.

The plan involves the participation of approximately 120 professionals, three mobile health posts and more than 30 Healthy Stations distributed in parks, squares and subway stations of the city1. These stations offer mineral water, fruit and cereal bars, as well as health checks such as blood pressure and blood glucose levels.

The health posts are located at strategic points such as Retiro, Constitución and the Obelisco, where the heat is felt most. In addition, special attention is paid to at-risk sectors, such as pregnant women, babies, the elderly and homeless people1. In case of emergency, citizens can call 107 (SAME) for immediate medical attention.

On August 20, C40 held a Heat Plan Working Group meeting with member cities from around the world to establish the requirements of a good heat prevention plan through a meeting called “Heat Plan WG Meeting: What’s key to a good heat plan? feat. Buenos Aires”.
